Both the Prologue and the Solterra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The Honda Prologue weighs 422 to 878 pounds more than the Subaru Solterra. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda Prologue is safer than the Subaru Solterra:

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does 40 MPH moderate front offset crash tests on new cars. In this updated test, results indicate that the Prologue is safer than the Solterra:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Honda Prologue is safer than the Subaru Solterra:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the Prologue is 1.1% to 1.7% less likely to roll over than the Solterra.

Warranty

There are over 66 percent more Honda dealers than there are Subaru dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Prologue’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Honda vehicles are better in initial quality than Subaru vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Honda above average in initial quality. With 8 more problems per 100 vehicles, Subaru is rated lower.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Subaru vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Honda above average in long-term dependability. With 1 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Subaru is rated below average.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Prologue has larger standard tires than the Solterra (255/60R19 vs. 235/60R18). The Prologue Elite’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Solterra (275/45R21 vs. 235/60R18).

The Prologue Elite’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Solterra Limited/Touring’s 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Prologue has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Solterra Premium. The Prologue Elite’s 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels on the Solterra Limited/Touring.

The Honda Prologue’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Subaru Solterra only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Prologue has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Solterra doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Having a flat tire is dangerous, inconvenient and expensive. The self-sealing tires available on the Prologue can automatically seal most punctures up to 3/16 of an inch, effectively preventing most flat tires. The Solterra doesn’t offer self-sealing tires.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Prologue’s wheelbase is 9.6 inches longer than on the Solterra (121.8 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Prologue is 3.1 inches wider in the front and 2.9 inches wider in the rear than on the Solterra.

Passenger Space

The Prologue has 14.2 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Solterra (111.7 vs. 97.5).

The Prologue has .8 inches more front headroom, 3.2 inches more front hip room, 1.4 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear headroom, 4.1 inches more rear legroom, 9.6 inches more rear hip room and 2.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Solterra.

Cargo Capacity

The Prologue has a much larger cargo volume than the Solterra with its rear seat up (25.2 vs. 23.8 cubic feet).

A standard locking glovebox keeps your small valuables safer in the Prologue. The Solterra doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

The Prologue has a 1500 lbs. towing capacity. The Solterra has no towing capacity.

Ergonomics

The Prologue Elite has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, navigation instruction, infotainment and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Solterra doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Prologue’s standard Push Button Start and Smart Entry allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Keyless Access and Start standard on the Solterra doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

The Prologue’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Solterra’s power window (except driver window) and power lock switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Prologue has a standard rear wiper. The Solterra doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Prologue’s headlights were rated “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the Solterra’s headlights are rated “Poor.”

The Prologue Touring/Elite’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Solterra has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Honda Prologue has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the infotainment. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Subaru charges extra for Homelink® on the Solterra.

Model Availability

The Prologue is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Solterra doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The Honda Prologue outsold the Subaru Solterra by almost four to one during 2025.
